IGenSpectrum is a student group that aims to provide a welcoming place for queer physicists at all levels within the UC Berkeley physics department.
We host a variety of events ranging from low-key coffee meetups and movie nights with the goal of fostering community and friendship to more serious events which offer opportunities for thought and reflection.
More broadly, our organization seeks to make the UC Berkeley physics department a more welcoming and supportive place for LGBTQ+ people by advocating with the department, performing outreach, and creating opportunities for professional development.
If you're interested in participating or just vibing with other queer physicists, consider joining our slack and mailing list!
I•Gen•Spectrum – short for Identity and Gender Spectrum, a student group for queer physicists at UC Berkeley.
ei•gen•spectrum – the set of all eigenvalues of a given matrix.
IGenSpectrum was founded in 2014 by a group of Berkeley graduate students. While our membership tends to be primarily composed of graduate and undergraduate students, we are open to physicists at all levels in the department.
Our events are open to anyone who wants to participate. However, our focus and primary membership is queer and questioning physicists, and if you're not queer we ask that you consider your role in the space and to maintain the good vibes.
We gather periodically for lunch on campus, and host regular in-person events like clothing swaps, coloring picnics, and barbecues. Sometimes we go rollerblading in miniskirts :P
